The first farm has been certified to the ASC Freshwater Trout Standard for responsible aquaculture. ASC certified trout from Danforel’s Christiansminde Freshwater Farm in Denmark will soon be available on the market.

“The certification of the first freshwater trout farm this week brings ASC a step closer to becoming a truly global programme. Michigan took a big step forward in the business of fish farming this week. The state issued a permit allowing the Grayling Fish Hatchery to expand more than ten fold. It will be the largest fish hatchery in the state by far when it ramps up production. The hatchery raises trout for restaurants and grocery stores.

The expansion comes as interest in fish farming is growing nationwide. There is even talk of developing the aquaculture industry offshore in the open waters of the Great Lakes, something that has only been done in Canadian waters.  Read more …

If you’re a fly fisherman, there are few rivers this side of the Rocky Mountains that compare with Michigan’s Au Sable River. There’s a particular nine-mile stretch east of Grayling known as the Holy Waters.

The water is clean, cold, easy to wade through, and packed with more than 100 pounds of wild trout per acre.

Tom Baird is with the Anglers of the Au Sable. It’s a fishing club with 800 members from all over the world. He says the clean water provides the perfect habitat for the bugs that trout love to eat from March through October.  Read more …

Scientists seek to improve health benefits of rainbow trout using dietary coriander oil along with vegetable oil to improve fatty acid composition in the fillet.

The health benefits of consuming omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids such as EPA and DHA are well established. The primary sources of these fatty acids in the human diet are through fish and seafood. Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan, Department of Animal and Poultry Science, are studying new methods of improving the fatty acid composition of farmed fish.  Read more …

Mark your calendars now!  The US Trout Farmers Association (USTFA) has scheduled the 2013 Fall Conference for September 12-14 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Pittsburgh-Green Tree, Pa.

With the theme of Partners in Progress, the USTFA conference will focus on how producers and stakeholders working together play such an integral role in the growth, successes and sustainability of the domestic trout industry.   Speakers will address a variety of topics, including advances in fish health management, redesigning the Lacey Act, emerging trout pathogens, research achievements, allied industry partnerships, and improvements in waste management.   A featured presentation will be Dr. Gary Jensen’s “Lessons Learned about Aquaculture in the United States”, a reflection on realities, considerations for future development and experiences during his 23 years at USDA.  Dr. Jensen serves as National Program Leader for Aquaculture and Chair of Joint Subcommittee on Aquaculture.

The conference agenda has been set with the USTFA Board of Directors Meeting being held Thursday morning, September 12.  The conference and trade show will open on September 12 at 2pm, followed by a President’s Reception that evening.  Friday, September 13, will feature a full day of presentations and exhibits, along with lunch, social hour and dinner.  An optional tour is scheduled for Saturday. which online casino pays the best
