Longtime fish farmer and former Villa Organic CEO Johan Andreassen is planning a bet on inland farming of Atlantic salmon in the United States.

Now the chairman of Norway-based Atlantic Sapphire, Andreassen is in the permitting process for a $250 million-$300m salmon farm in Homestead, Florida, capable of producing 30,000 metric tons a year of whole gutted Atlantic salmon for the US market.  Read more …

Scientists have discovered a way of stimulating farmed salmon to convert plant oil in the feed to marine omega-3.

The Global Salmon Initiative (GSI), the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organisation, and Rabobank joined up for the first time in the US last week to demonstrate how the global farmed-salmon industry is leading the way in changing aquaculture-business practices to ensure a sustainable future for the industry.

The US is the largest consumer by country of farmed salmon worldwide, consuming more than 282,000 tonnes last year. In fact, demand for farmed salmon has increased by over 14 per cent in the last five years in the US alone, and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Environment Canada, the agency of the Government of Canada with responsibility for regulating environmental policies and issues, has decided that Genetically Modified (GM) AquAdvantage® Salmon from AquaBounty Technologies is not harmful to the environment or human health when produced in contained facilities.

AquaBounty will therefore now be able to produce eggs on a commercial scale at its facility in Prince Edward Island, Canada.  Read more …

On the 21 October 2013, Norwegian companies Futurama and AquaOptima signed an agreement with Lim Shrimp Organization to create ‘Aquapolis’, the world’s first land based fully intergrated salmon and cod farming facility in Hainan, China. Lucy Towers, TheFishSite Editor reports.

The aquaculture complex will cover the production of cod and salmon from egg to market size in a demonstration farm and smaller grow-out units will be run and managed by individual farmers.

The farming system will be an indoor temperature controlled recirculating aquaculture system (RAS), with multiple stack in one building, thus increasing the productivity and shortening the length of culture, Djames Lim, CEO of Lim Shrimp Organization, told TheFishSite.  Read more …

Read a story about salmon, and the odds are good that, somewhere, it’ll tell you that wild salmon tastes better than farmed. But does it? We decided to find out in a blind tasting, and assembled a panel that included noted Washington seafood chefs and a seafood wholesaler.

The fish swam the gamut. We had wild king from Washington, frozen farmed from Costco, and eight in between, including Verlasso farmed salmon from Chile, which is the first open-pen farmed salmon to get a Seafood Watch “buy” recommendation.
